Abstract

This present paper provides a descriptive analysis toward a traditional court dance called Bedhaya, one of the cultural products of the Javanese community in Surakarta which evolved into its modern version Bedhayan due to the flow of global culture. By applying the theories of Hermeneutics, Ideology, Aesthetics and Semiotics, the data are inferred according to the purposed questions. The inquiry is directed to infer the factors encompassing Bedhaya dance such as its emergence and the development, relationship with the existence and its role in the society, the relationship with systems within the society or with various interests. The results showed that the Bedhayan dance as developed by the local artists or choreographers in Surakarta as a realization of the local community’s thought, norm and principle (ideology) which covers both the economic and freedom interests. The ideologies reflected from the attitudes of the supporting community (of dancers and choreographers) toward Bedhayan dance are identified to imply the self-existence, freedom, political, economic, and market interests. The emergence Bedhayan dance was motivated by thoughts of the artists in constructing the dance movements to fit the purpose and function of current art creation. All the changes are deemed to be able to increase the economic welfare of performers, choreographers and the government on the tourism potentiality of the nation. However, there is the dangerous aspects in the development of a cultural dance to view it as a mere commodity, which at the end would give impressions of profanity, commercialization, even the shifts on the traditional values of the dance.

Abstract

Collective movement for drug eradication organized by the community was proved to be more effective in stopping the drug trafficking compared to the security approaches organized by the state apparatus (government). Based on the case study of communitys collective movement in the village of Ujoeng Pacu Lhokseumawe, this artilce is intended to show the complex phenomena of genealogy and the dynamics of the collective movement of the community in fighting the drug mafias. Using the Perspective of Tilly Collective Movement and the Method of Phenomenolgy, the study found that the jihad collective movement on the drug eradication caried out by the community of Ujong Pacu was motivated by the rigging relationship among theological unrest, social and economical security, and concerns about the future generations. The consideration of the drug as the only trigger of any  immoral (ma maksiet) activities towards Allah Almighty has made the flow of this movement not only significant to the social movement but also to theological movement (jihad). Due to its interpretation as a religious movement, the moral of the drug eradication movement was not deterred despite the various threats and the terror bombing as an act of counter-attack from the drug mafias occured repeatedly in theUjoeng Pacu’s community.

Abstract

This paper aims to understand the role of urbanization to street vendors emerging. In the case of Semarang, more than 54% Semarang’s street vendors come from its hinterlands. These sectors turn to development dichotomy that have a positive and negative impact. Positively, this area becomes resilience economy people. In the negative side, more than 60% vendors make their stall in the public space. This research used a mix-method approach taking 271 samples, Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and in deep interviews. From this study, it can be concluded that urbanization had led to the outbreak of street vendors through (1) rural-urban migration, and (2) the social change as a result of gentrification. Working as street vendors turned out to be an alternative way of life to adapt to global economic uncertainty. Also, there are 71.6% of street vendors open their stalls in 2003-2009, or about 6-7 years after the monetary crisis (1997). It shows that the financial crisis is not the primary trigger for the outbreak of street vendors. Another interesting finding is that there is a new phenomenon in the form of the intervention of the middle class who took part in this business.

Abstract

For the last decade, the popularity and the imagery of Sedulur Sikep identity attribution on mass media rose and changed significantly, triggered by their involvement on a movement against cement factory plan in Kendeng, Central Java. Even so, some of the sikeps themselves claimed their absence and dissagrement on the movement. Thus, this anthropological study aims an explanation on how this situation led them to recognize the value of “being sikep” and how it affected sikep or the ‘on behalf of’ sikep movement in perceive and practice the conception of environment and its ecological issue. The paradigm shifting of ecology aspect on their cultural identity then tried to be mapped by looking on their ecological knowledge, the adaptability, and the power on controlling visibility space as a product of “nature” and “nurture”. Subsequently, it was found later that the disunity caused by their own personal experience on defining the reciprocity bond between their identity as peasant and the nature resources. The aftermath; dynamism and stagnancy then could be seen as their alter adaptation method, relying on how their belief conceive the ecological dispute and resistance towards the living space of Sedulur Sikep itself.
